Awareness Programme for Lawyers in Kalutara

Starting off the sessions was PEaCE/ECPAT Programme Officer Amali Ranasinghe, who provided the attendees with an understanding of Online Child Sexual Exploitation and Abuse (OCSEA). Prominent lawyer and digital law expert Dr. Sunil Abeyratne joined in with his session afterwards, focusing on the intricacies of ‘Computer Crime’. Dr. Abeyratne detailed the vulnerabilities in computer systems, which are increasingly prone to intrusion and destruction. He highlighted the significant impact of disruptions in these systems on daily life and emphasized the shift from traditional to high-tech crimes. Computers, he noted, are becoming essential tools and storage for criminal activities, suggesting a future where computer-related crimes dominate the landscape.

ASP Chandima Arumapperuma presented the third and final session of the day from the Criminal Investigation Department (CID). She covered "Safety and Security with Computer Usage," sharing several case studies on child sexual abuse and exploitation in online spaces. ASP Arumapperuma provided detailed methods for reporting such crimes and contact information for relevant authorities. She also discussed the unique vulnerabilities women face in digital spaces, illustrating the broader societal impacts of cybercrime. These presentations collectively offered a comprehensive overview of the evolving landscape of computer crime, highlighting the need for updated legal frameworks, forensic methodologies, and heightened public awareness.

Beyond the legal awareness of this event, PEaCE/ECPAT Sri Lanka's discussions also shed light on the broader issues of child abuse and online exploitation. A significant aspect of these discussions revolved around the introduction of new laws, such as the Evidence (Special Provisions) Act in Sri Lanka, established in 1995. This law plays a crucial role in facilitating the presentation of electronic evidence in court, ensuring its relevancy, accuracy, and authenticity. The discussions highlighted the need for continuous updates to legal frameworks to keep pace with the rapid advancements in technology and the corresponding rise in digital crimes.

The sessions provided a platform for sharing knowledge, raising awareness, and discussing effective strategies to combat child abuse and online exploitation. By equipping key stakeholders with the necessary tools and information, these trainings aimed to create a ripple effect, fostering a safer and more informed society. This awareness programme for lawyers, along with the broader discussions and training sessions initiated by PEaCE/ECPAT Sri Lanka, highlighted the multifaceted challenges of child abuse and online exploitation. The programme underscored the critical role of legal professionals in addressing these issues, while also emphasizing the importance of education and updated legal frameworks in combating the growing threat of digital crimes.
