The numbers that have shaken the island—168 and 22, 131 and 10—are not an increase compared to the previous year, according to the NCPA analysis, as stated by Udayakumara Amarasinghe, the Chairman of the NCPA, in a recent Ada Derana Broadcast.
The people of Sri Lanka simply weren't aware of the situation regarding child abuse cases. Do the people even understand the gravity of the situation now?

Great news from the government of Sri Lanka! The cabinet has approved amendments to the penal code, making rape of male children a criminal offence. This long-awaited change will provide justice and support for victims. #HumanRightsDay #ChildrensRights
The majority of the children who had fallen victim to these crimes of sexual abuse were from broken homes. Mother is abroad and father is a daily wage earner who returns late in the evening. The children are left with grandparents or distant relatives. The lack of affection and parental guidance from home encourages the child to seek affection elsewhere. Without adequate sexual education, understanding of their own emotions and body, tragedies of the worst kind occur. #ENDVIOLENCE #STOPCHILDABUSE #SriLanka. #SriLankaPolice. #ECPAT.
In a world where the natural curiosity of our children often leads them to explore their evolving bodies and emotions, the absence of open, honest, and age-appropriate discussions at home and in schools leaves a void. This void is increasingly being filled by the internet, where the first 'lessons' they encounter are often through explicit content, not designed for educational purposes. This exposure can lead to misconceptions and risky behaviours, as children may try to replicate what they see online without understanding the context or consequences. It's imperative that we, as a society, provide our children with the correct resources and support to help them navigate their developmental journey in a healthy, informed, and safe manner. Remember, the absence of proper sex education doesn't prevent children from learning; it just prevents them from learning the right things.
